Tips for Getting Hired After a Career Break

We all want our resumes to be ‘perfect’ in order to get the job of our dream. However, not always we are able to maintain our resumes in a way that all recruiters want them to be. One of the key areas that bother the recruiters is a ‘career break’. Though, a career break is not always intentional, as most career breaks are circumstantial. But, it is little difficult to convince the recruiter that your break in the career is circumstantial, and a lot depends on this when it comes to getting a good job.

Listed below are some tips to get a great job even after a career break:

  • Always be truthful

One of the best ways to convince the recruiter that your career break is justified is by conveying the message truthfully. Recruiters are very smart people. Also, as they talk to several people daily, therefore, it becomes easy for them to detect a lie. Thus, the best way to justify your career break is honestly explaining it, and the recruiter will definitely understand if your reason is actually genuine.

  • Don’t go over the board

Though conveying your message is important, but refrain yourself from going over the board. Don’t give too much explanation. Rather, try and explain your reason in the briefest manner possible. Also, when we try to desperately explain something too much it looks fake, even if it is true. It is better to answer very calm and with full confidence. And, don’t get scared if the recruiters cross questions, as that’s definitely a part of their job.

  • Cover it up with some learning or project

If possible try to cover up your career break with a project that you undertook. You may also try and explain the recruiter how that break became a learning period for you. You can share the things that you have learned during that period. This will definitely create a good impression on the recruiter as he or she should think that you were doing something fruitful even during the break.

Career breaks don’t look very appealing on a resume, but most of the times, they can be justified. Thus, if you have any career break in your resume that’s bothering you too much, then instead of stressing, plan to justify it decently. This will definitely help you get a job quickly.

4 proven ways to crack any interview like a Master!

Whenever we start looking out for a job, the first challenge that we face is ‘interview’. Interviews are already stressful, but what makes them all the more stressful is ‘halt’. While we are sitting on the chair just outside the interviewer’s room, we are not only nervous but quite frightened as well. The moment we see anybody walking in or walking out of the interview room, our heart starts pumping heavily. It is absolutely normal to feel tense, but it is always suggested to maintain a certain level of composure to make sure you step in the interview room with full confidence!

Here’re some proven tips to stay as cool as a cucumber while going for an interview:

  • Walking is relaxing

If you don’t have to wait for too long, and there is somebody who can call you when your turn comes, then there’s nothing better than walking outside the interview hall. You may also choose to listen to your favorite songs or even meditate (if possible), as it will help to keep you calm. Avoid looking too much at the interview room before your turn.

  • Don’t indulge in interview-discussions

Believe it or not, the more you talk about the interview at the time of the interview, the more you get nervous. Therefore, it is always suggested to not talk about anything related to the interview just when you are sitting in the hall. If you have some serious doubts than only clear those doubts with someone. Else, just keep yourself engaged in something else.

  • Think about the ‘good’ things

The best possible way to stay calm outside the interview hall is by distracting yourself. You may indulge in a fun game in your phone or you may also choose to talk to a friend or family member. You can even talk to the people sitting with you, but make sure you don’t talk too much about the interview. The best it to start about things that you like, for example, a vacation that you are planning or shopping etc.

  • Talk to yourself

Keep reminding yourself to stay calm. Yes! This is a great way to stay composed as well. Just keep telling your mind to stay at peace and to not over think. Also, boost your confidence by repeating statements like ‘I can do it’ or ‘I am well prepared for this interview’. This will not only boost your self-confidence but will also kick away all your nervousness.

How to choose between two offer letters?

So, if there is a situation where you are lucky enough to get two offer letters from two different companies, and you can’t decide which one to choose, here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Compare the profiles and KRAs

We all want to do what we like. Some of us are actually very lucky, as we are able to find the jobs that we like to go to. Therefore, if you have two offer letters, the first step to take is to compare the job roles. While reading the job requirements and expectations, you will get a good idea of what you are expected to do. Though you might have read them earlier also, but this time, just compare the two options that you have. And, then based on what you like to do more, select the best option.

  • Compare the companies

The company where we work also matters. If the company is good and values employees, then we would definitely like to spend more time in that organization. Hence, make sure that you properly compare the two organizations well. You can read information on their website, and the reviews given by employees on various sites. This type of information will surely help you to know which company looks better to you.

  • Follow your heart

This may look a little preachy but it is important. At the end of the day, you have to spend a lot of time in the firm, and with the people. So, make sure you listen to your heart before deciding with your mind. Sometimes, our gut feelings strongly say something but we ignore it, so avoid doing that. Ask a Career Changer: How Do I Pick a New Career Path When I Have Many Passions?

Are you contemplating a career change and want to move forward in pursuit of your passions as your career? You may feel you are good at a few things but lack the practical experience to go ahead with them.

You may find yourself being multi-talented, capable of writing for publications, even being a jamming musician or sports person and may also love coding. And, amidst so many talents that you enjoy, you are confused whether you should change over to a new career path? Or should you make time for your passion after hours?

If you are thinking of changing over to a new career to follow your passion, it is hard to find a situation where your passion can pay your bills. So, to help you decide, I will take you through certain steps to aid you in taking the right direction.

Make Time for Your Passion

It may be a good idea to put aside some time for your passion. Whether you are thinking of jam sessions with an amateur group or sports or coding, you may want to put aside time during weekends or even weekdays. It will allow you to discover the intensity of your desire and judge whether a small amount of indulgence is satisfying or you desire to invest in it as a full-fledged career.

So there are two things that will come out of it, one, the more time that you set aside will enable you to become better and more confident at it, and you will know what more possibilities there are for you out there. And you will meet some people who may prove to be invaluable, should you decide to take the path. And you may also find out in the network what diversion to take and make some money. This is your freelancing time and making connections and finding customers while you pursue your hobby after hours.

Eventually, you may need to invest more learning or rehearsing time. Some take off 6 months to learn or take a course or get hands-on experience as interns. Finally, when you have stepped into your passion, with formal training, some freelance work, and quality projects, you will be ready to write a new resume and make your hobby full time.

Don’t lose ground comparing to other professionals

For most stepping into a new industry means sending out lots of applications and going for interviews which may be overwhelming. This may be a good time to use your network. The projects that you did may come handy now. Also, it may be overwhelming to meet professionals who have gone to school for the profession and had a long experience with it. Try not to fall into the trap of comparing yourself. Instead, focus on the amount and how quickly you have learned. Make most of all upcoming opportunities and do not allow yourself to lose your track.

The change from passion to the profession is a different experience for all. Maybe you will freelance on the side or take up some interesting projects or even change your passion for a career. Whatever you choose connects with and appreciates the works of other talented people and you will find fulfillment in your decisions.

How to spot a difficult boss at the time of interview?

When it comes to a long and healthy professional life, it is extremely important to have a positive relationship with your immediate manager. No matter how good you are with your work, at the end of the day, it all drills down to your positive relation with your team including your boss. Though, when we start working with a manager, slowly and steadily things do fall in place and we all understand the psyche of our manager. And, most of the times, we are also able to flex ourselves as per the expectations and the behavior of the boss. However, no one likes to work with a difficult boss. And, it is always better to spot a difficult boss at the time of the interview only. Here’s how you can do that:

  • The vibes

This may sound a little fictional but vibes do play a major role when it comes to interviewing. Sometimes you do get good and pos]itive vibes from your recruiter or your manager. However, there are times when you don’t really get a lot of positivity when you talk to your recruiting manager. So, if you don’t ‘feel’ good while talking to a recruiting manager, or you don’t get positive vibes, it is extremely important to rethink about your decision about joining the firm (if you get selected).

  • You are not feeling comfortable

When it comes to working with a manager, you need to share some level of comfort. So, if you don’t feel comfortable at all while talking to your recruiting manager probably it is a sign that you should not ignore. First of all, you need to find out that what the reasons that you are feeling uncomfortable.  And, slowly, when you will drill down to the reasons of feeling uncomfortable, you might end up getting some reasons of not choosing that manager.

  • Is he sounding too dominating

A few of the managers have a habit of making their subordinates feel that they are reporting to him or her. And, it is always difficult to work with such managers. Therefore, you would be very lucky if you immediately spot the recruiting manager if he or she is too dominating. And, if you do so, then think a lot of times before deciding to work with him or her. However, there are some people who might look a little dominating in the beginning but are actually very nice leaders. So, make sure you do your assessments right.

You didn’t get that job offer certainly not because you’re not perfect!

Whenever we go for any interview, our main aim is always to impress the recruiter and get the job. We prepare ourselves for the interview with the sole motive of getting a job offer. However, not always we are able to impress the recruiter. It is very difficult to expect a job offer from every interview that you attend. One has to be prepared for the setbacks as well, as setbacks lead to new learnings. However, we never anticipate to hear a ‘no’ from the recruiter. But, most of the times, whenever we hear a ‘no’ we immediately judge ourselves and think that probably we are not apt for the role. Though, yes, as humans we should keep improving and learning but at the end of the day we have to never underestimate ourselves as well.

Here’re a few of the reasons behind hearing a ‘no’ from the recruiter:

  • Mismatch of their budget and your salary expectations

Though, most of the times, a recruiter only shortlists you for further screenings after knowing your current salary and your salary expectations. Also, there are some set industry standards for hikes in salary, but at the end of the day it’s all about the fulfillment of a candidate’s expectations. Sometimes, no matter how much a company likes a candidate, they are still not able to match up to the expectations of the candidate. This is one of the most prominent situations that leads to a job rejection. However, this doesn’t mean that you should not expect or demand a good hike, but it simply means that you should only ask for an amount that falls under certain standards.

  • The company might have retained their existing employee

Most of the times a company releases a job vacancy when an employee, which is already handling that job is leaving the company. But, if their existing employee is good, they will always look for ways to retain that employee. Retention takes time as both the company and the employee has to deliberate. Therefore, at times, the recruiter might find you suitable for a job, but at the end, they couldn’t finalize you. Not because you are not perfect, but because their employee decides to stay and their business requirements will be fulfilled.

So, next time when you hear a ‘no’ don’t take it to your heart. Do learn from it and improve yourself, but refrain from any negative thoughts.
